The Need

Sam Owens is a four year old, energetic little boy who loves life. He loves cars, trucks, Paw Patrol and being outside. Sam is developmentally delayed with ADHD, sensory issues, and signs of autism. While his family was on vacation in April, he contracted E coli (from a Shigella bacteria) which lead to HUS (Hemolytic Uremic syndrome). This is a bacterial infection that destroys the white blood cells in your body.

Sam was in the Cincinnati Children’s hospital fighting for his life for a month. During this time, his kidneys and GI systems shut down, he developed heart blood pressure problems, fluid on his lungs, and the infection moved to his brain causing episodes rendering him unconscious. He had multiple blood transfusions and dialysis treatments. They had to put a central line in his neck and insert a NG tube to feed him and give medications.

Sam is now home recovering from this but the medical bills and continued cost of care for ongoing issues are very challenging. He no longer needs dialysis, but continues to need 3 different types of therapy each week. Along with severe mood swings, Sam now suffers from motor ticks and stutters now when stressed. Doctors continue to tests to try to understand if the damage to his brain is permanent and why he is still having unconscious episodes. Sam's family's goal is to help his life be as normal as possible. Please consider a shirt purchase, or a donation to his online fundraiser.
